the garden is in...

If you live in the Midwest you know that Spring is really late in making her appearance this year. I kept putting away my Winter clothes and then pulling them out again. That more than likely means that we will skip over Spring entirely and jump right into Summer. But it is time to do the Spring planting.

While I cannot remember ever really having a garden I do like a few plants... Early Girl and Roma tomatoes, basil and chives...maybe some peppers. Each year here I unsuccessfully plant. We don't really have good sun for veggies. But last year our neighbor took down her falling down boathouse and we reclaimed 5 feet of land. And a new patch of sun. So this year I will try the container garden here. It is does not work then next year it goes up on the guest room balcony...

This will be our third Summer here. I am starting to know what to put where. I put half a flat of red impatiens in the front door urn. Next I'll do the same around the tree in the deck... today I should get the rest of the pots out of the basement and start pondering those.

spring is around the corner...

The ice is getting that look.

It is melting at the shoreline.

We saw the first canoe on the small strip of open water.

John starts back to work at the golf course on Monday.

So Friday we go and get the Miata out of storage.

Yup... Spring is around the corner.

And on a much less happy note here is an amazing link to satellite photos of Japan before and after the tsunami. The destruction is heart breaking.

spring is coming...

John and my nephew Taylor went for a walk Saturday on the lake....

We are amazed to see the ice along the shoreline. Big thick edges up against the break wall. Amazing to watch and even more amazing that Winter is almost over... there is hope for Spring!

As of this weekend all the ice shacks disappeared off the lake... and we heard geese... and soon we change our clocks. We made it through another Winter. Whew.

The Miata...

Final post of Spring... last Sunday we went and got the Miata out of storage and put my junker Winter car away. The Miata is a 1990. She runs like a top. I can't wait until she is a little older and I can get collectors plates.

As far as Spring goes we probably jumped the gun. The Miata does not drive well or actually at all in snow... and it appears we may have some coming this weekend. But as we know when it is Spring the snow doesn't last long.

Kayaking thru the ice...

E ndless fascination with what is going on outside. This is our first March here and we are watching the ice break up, move around and melt. Every time we walk by the windows it is different.

As we were making dinner yesterday we were watching a kayaker paddle thru the ice chunks.

I went for a walk yesterday and noticed how much colder it was on our deck than it was 3 blocks away. John pointed out that temperature wise it is like we have a really big bathtub filled with ice cubes in our backyard.
