font bros

Check out this newly designed site. Font Bros Stuart Sandler and Mike Ibach are the guys behind this site that is full of unique display fonts. Their library includes over 5,000 so you have a lot to choose from. I can personally vouch for these guys and the quality of their fonts. I've been on their site for quite a few years now. Click here to visit.

Stuart is well known in the world of type, he also has the site Font Diner. Between these two sites you should never lack for something fun and different for any project you are working on.

typographic posters

Cool site... posters from around the world that are type based. Lots of great work from many different artists.

What they say about themselves... this project was established online on 11/nov/2008 to gather and showcase our love for type and design in a medium that connects to our essence.

Rather than promoting design work in a "what's new" blog format, we form a collective platform of designers, studios, projects and exhibitions that conceives posters with a strong focus on typography and expressive graphical compositions, with the intent that it inspires others.

We know that if a poster can change one person, it can change many.

chalk artist Dana Tanamachi

Brooklyn-based chalk-lettering designer and graphic artist Dana Tanamachi is definitely someone to watch.

I am amazed at her work and would LOVE to paint the back of our front door with black chalk paint but I absolutely HATE the feel of chalk on a surface. I don't even like how chalk feels against my fingers. But it is wonderful to see someone use this medium so beautifully.

Go here and be prepared to swoon at all the lovely chalk typography. http://www.danatanamachi.com/chalk/

(Thanks Nancy!)

what's on the drawing board...

big creative week for me. Normally I don't do any freelance work but I've been busy the last couple weeks with some graphic work, some illustrating and lettering and web work for the very small group of people I still do some things for. This week I am mostly back to my work and it is time to start a new font!

The above bag is for a fundraiser. Artists are being asked to decorate a bag any way they want. I think I am going to do black and white doodles on the bag like my doodle fonts. Pondering if it should be a category or just a little of everything... not sure yet.

I wanted to do some modern calligraphy script fonts for a long time. I think I may be close to starting. I do know that this one will be called RSVP.

One of my best selling fonts is Plz Print Brush. It was my second font and that was 10 years ago and I know I can make a better version now so I am giving this some thought too. It will be called Plz Print Marker Outline.

Probably somewhere in between I will make another destination Doodle font. That will be New Orleans Doodles. I've been there quite a few times so that will help me with the fine details.

What is on your drawing board?

vernacular typography

Lettering in the Urban Environment... interesting site, plus a blog. Sooo much to look at. Signage has always intrigued me as did the sign painters of yesterday. And of course all these wonderful examples are slowly disappearing from our landscape. Check it out here.

la belle vie design

so cute... if I was getting married now I would want Jenn to make my wedding invitations. She uses some of my picture fonts in her designs. Take a look at her etsy shop. She has been written up in the Houston Brides magazine and Martha Stewart Weddings. She can do a custom one-of-a-kind invitation for you. And isn't that what weddings are all about now?

last post of the year

Happy Holidays to all. I wish you all the merriest of times. And that you find whatever you are wishing for under the tree.

I am taking the last couple weeks of the year off from posting to wind down the year and think about fonts and marketing and branding and other creative things for next year. And to enjoy all the holiday revelry that the year end brings.

And yes there is a type calendar, a page-a-day one in fact. I have 2 fonts in 2012 and have submitted 2 for the 2013 calendar. Fingers crossed as the calendar is juried. Happy New Year, see you in 2012!
