Everything Is Illuminated, a movie

This was last weeks Netflix pick. Actually this was my second time seeing this. I just asked John how to describe this and he said it was a buddy pick. (Guys being buddies.) I don't know. I hate to use the work quirky again so let's say off beat.

Kind of like Indiana Jones but different... maybe if Indy was a vegetarian Jew.

It's a movie you almost need to see a second time for all the pieces to fit together. And I LOVED how it was shot. It was a visual treat. The shots were framed in a very balanced way. The above graphic give a feel.

A young American Jewish man begins an exhausting quest -- aided by a naïve Ukranian translator -- to find the righteous gentile woman who saved his grandfather when his small Ukranian village (along with most of the populace) was obliterated during the Nazi invasion of Russia in 1941. Elijah Wood is Jonathan. Based on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer.

I intend to read the book which I can only assume will be quite different from the movie. It was serious subject matter but the look made it seem not so... of course now that I've seen the movie I am sure that those are the pictures I'll see in my head.

I highly recommend this one.
