The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society by Shaffer & Barrows
/First, I was asked to join the Morrison Street Book Club. And I went and it was a very nice group of women, many of them immediate neighbors. How lovely. And this is the read for September. And I read it early. Second, I love to write letters. I like everything about writing letters... nice paper, nice pens, addressing the envelope, using an interesting stamp, having the color of the stamp work with the envelope. OK you get the picture. And there is nothing better than getting a real letter in the mail. I think letter writing has become a lost art.
This book is written in all letters. Letters to Juliette, an author who comes to Guernsey to meet the Literary Society or Book Club. Letters to Juliette's publisher, the many book club members on Guernsey, to her good women friends...
Here is a video about the book...
I always read a couple chapters and when I can hear the author's voice I go and look at her picture and read about her. I was saddened to learn that Mary Ann Shaffer, passed away in February of 2008. Her niece co-wrote this with her. Mary Ann did not see her book published. It was her first novel.
I enjoyed this book a lot. In part it was because it was all letters... letters are just different from email, they just are. And I miss them.
