creative process... typography table

Over a year ago our sweet friend Phil made this little side table for us and sent it as a kit. We put it together and then moved and it got lost somewhere in the basement.

It has surfaced... and all along I've been thinking that somehow it would be a Paris table embellished with all things Paris... But then we moved here and it seems like it should be a typography table. In black and white with tiny accent colors... So out has come my type ephemera and my thinking cap.

Hmmmm Thinking Caps... we just saw Alice in Wonderland yesterday and I was once again taken with the Mad Hatter. I wish he could make me a thinking cap. Something between the Harry Potter sorting hat that could talk to me and a hat for a tea party. If you are looking for a not for kids fairy tale I recommend it. I loved all the visuals. I've posted a link to the right.

As the table progresses I'll keep you posted!

(Thanks Gwen and Kirk for the additions to the pile of letters!)

font friday... ohh la la... Paris Doodles!

Who doesn't like Paris? This font was SO much fun to do and it was equally fun to revisit our trip of several years ago and recapture it in a whimsical way. Memories of a feeling, a rainy afternoon, a glass of wine, an outdoor cafe, a metro stop... This is a sample of some of the 30 Paris Doodles included in the font.

Font Friday... Typodarium

Since I like fonts and I assume some of you like fonts I am going to try and do a Font Friday post most weeks. This week's is about this fabulous Font-A-Day calendar I tried to buy last year. It is created in Germany so by the time I was looking for a new calendar it appeared this was either not readily available here or was sold out. I was sad, I take my calendars seriously.

Then in February while on vacation I got an email to submit some of my fonts to this calendar for possible inclusion for 2011. When I got home and went to work on this project I found that all the slots had been filled in just a couple hours. Once again I was sad, but I went on a waiting list.

Late last week I got an email that there were now a few slots open and I could submit again. I went to work immediately and have just learned this week that the 4 fonts above will be included in the calendar. I am so excited.

Here is a fun You Tube video on this years calendar.

Now I just hope I can get my hands on the 2011 calendar.

Web Fonts

I f you do any kind of web design you know the dismal font choices that are out there. Well now there are web fonts. All of my fonts are now web fonts as well as desktop fonts. You can get them at FontSpring. That means you could easily use Best Regardz for headings on your website. Web fonts are a giant leap forward for all of us designers. Enjoy!

Buy a font... make a difference... and kudos to Apple!

The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) is proud to announce the release of “Coming Together”, a font created exclusively for Font Aid IV to benefit the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti. The font consists entirely of ampersands, to represent the idea of people coming together to help one another. Type designers, graphic designers, and other artists from around the world contributed artwork to the font.

The font will be sold for $20US. It is now available through font distributors Veer, Ascender Fonts, FontShop and MyFonts. All proceeds from the sale of the font will go to Doctors Without Borders, to help with their relief efforts in Haiti.

I contributed several ampersands to this project. Certainly a worthy cause. You can check it out here.

PS... A nd I must add that I love Apple! I know that comes as no surprise to anyone, but in less than 24 hours they fed exed me a free, brand new Time Capsule and everything it up and running and I have internet again. Oh Happy Day! In case you don't know a Time Capsule is a magic piece of equipment that backs up our 3 laptops every hour without us doing a thing. It is also a WiFi base station. The truly fabulous part was that no one argued with me and they not only did want they said they even got the equipment here sooner than they normally do. THANK YOU APPLE! YOU ARE THE BEST!

Wall of Type...

H ere is a little project in progress. I am collecting letters in different colors and fonts and sizes. This is like curating an art show. I am enjoying the process of finding the letters and putting the alphabet together. My very patient husband put these all up in a small bathroom for me. And this is where they will live as I continue to acquire more.
